Chasing the Dragon Documentary Screening
Martinsburg Combats Opiate Addiction as Law Enforcement and Educators Partner to Present Documentary Film
The Martinsburg Police Department and Berkeley County Schools today announced their partnership in co-sponsoring a major public event as part of their joint efforts to combat the serious threat of opiate abuse and addiction in our communities.
On May 16th at Martinsburg High School, the law enforcement and education entities will present a screening of the documentary film, “Chasing the Dragon—The Life of An Opiate Addict.” The powerful film, produced by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), effectively aims at educating students, young adults, and families about the dangers of addiction. The partnership behind the film’s showing in Martinsburg is the first community-based screening of its kind in the country; bringing together the cooperative efforts of a city police department, community law enforcement leaders, and a local public school system.
A brief program will immediately precede the film’s showing and will include: opening remarks by Martinsburg Police Chief Maury Richards, introduction of Martinsburg Mayor George Karos and Berkeley County Schools Superintendent Manny Arvon, and introduction and brief remarks by representatives of the FBI and DEA.
The screening of the 49 minute film will begin at 6:15 p.m. and will be followed by a panel discussion featuring one of the documentary’s participants. The inclusion of one of the film’s participants as a panel member, who will share her powerful personal story and family experience, will also be the first time this has been done during a screening of this important documentary.
The free film screening and program will be held in the auditorium of the Martinsburg High School located at 701 S. Queen Street on Monday, May 16, 2016. The program, which is also presented in collaboration with the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of West Virginia, is scheduled to begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. and will end at 7:30 p.m. For additional information visit: MartinsburgPD.org/dragon.
