Martinsburg Police & Fire Explorers Host Open House
On Saturday, April 8, 2017 The Martinsburg Police and Fire Explore Post 27 will host an open house for the public and area youth who are interested in learning about and joining the Post. The event will be held in the Martinsburg High School Auditorium from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Admission and participation is free of charge. Light refreshments and snacks will be provided. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities and view demonstrations that showcase the activities Explorers engage in throughout the year as members of the Post.
Demonstrations will include how police perform a felony traffic stop as well as the first actions firefighters take upon arriving at a structure fire. WVU Healthnet Aeromedical Transport will be landing a helicopter for people to look and learn about their role in the 911 response system. Participants will also have multiple hands-on stations that will allow them to practice some the skills first responders’ need. These activities will include a challenging “Use of Force” simulator, AED (Automated External Defibrillator) trainer, crime scene fingerprinting, and firefighter gear rapid dress give participants to chance to get involved and get a taste of the activities that Explorers participate in while learning about the police and fire professions.
Affiliated with Learning for Life and Boy Scouts of America, Youth Exploring Posts are co-ed organizations for youth ages 14 – 21 who have completed the 8th grade. The Martinsburg Police and Fire Explorer Post 27 is a unique partnership between the City of Martinsburg’s Fire and Police Departments. These post provides members the opportunity to learn about the jobs and practice the skills of these public safety professions. The Departments provide advisors who serve as mentors, and resources to the post. Explorers learn about police and fire career fields through training, instruction, and practice.
Saturday’s Open House is part of the Martinsburg Post’s spring recruitment drive. Young people interested in joining will be able to fill out applications at the event.
