Deputy Chief Awarded “Elks Citizen of the Year”
The Martinsburg Police Department would like to congratulate our own Deputy Chief George Swartwood, who was awarded as the “West Virginia State Elks Citizen of the Year” on Wednesday evening! The following is an announcement from the Martinsburg Elks Lodge #778 regarding the award:
The Benevolent Protective Order of Elks (B.P.O.E.) Martinsburg Lodge #778 is proud to announce that their nomination, Deputy Chief George B. Swartwood, of the Martinsburg City Police Department has been selected as the WV State Elks Citizen of the Year 2016-2017.
Martinsburg Elks #778 honored Deputy Chief Swartwood at their regular meeting last night. He was presented with a Central District and State Plaque in recognition of his exemplary service to the citizens of the Martinsburg community.
As a 33-year member of the MPD, George has received many accolades and department honors. He led the way for the “Handle with Care” program partnering with the Berkeley County Schools. He is a graduate of the 53rd Basic Class of the West Virginia State Police Academy and a 1992 graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy 168th Session.
Deputy Chief Swartwood, along with Rodney Woods, have chaired the Elks Lodge #778’s acclaimed “Law and Safety Day” ceremony for the past twenty-two years. This program recognizes and honors local, state, and federal officers and agencies for their important role in keeping our communities safe and secure.
For these and many, many, other contributions to our community, Deputy Chief George B. Swartwood was the perfect recipient for the WV State Elks Citizen of the Year 2016-2017.
Deputy Chief Swartwood commented, “This is a great honor and I’m humbled by it. This award belongs to and represents everyone that has helped with and worked so hard in making Martinsburg and our surrounding community a great place to live, work, and call home. Again, thank you so much to Nanci, our Elks Lodge, and all involved.”
The awards were presented by the Exalted Ruler, Nanci Hovermale, of Martinsburg Elks Lodge #778. ER Nanci Hovermale stated that “Martinsburg Elks Lodge #778 is proud to support the youth, veterans, and outstanding citizens working together for the betterment of our local communities.”
