Academy Requirements:

Class one evening per week for two to two 1/2 hours for nine weeks

 Age requirements between 9-14

 Interested in Police work and operations

Application are sent out to schools when the classes are scheduled and are also available at the Martinsburg Police Department. The class dates are advertised in the Martinsburg Journal

Sample Class Schedule:

    Orientation and tour of police department to include equipment, vehicles, communications, complaint procedures and community policing.

    Intro to the US Constitution and laws of West Virginia. Speakers to include Federal Judges and Prosecutors. Tour the Federal Courthouse.

Investigation of crimes to include evidence collection. Speakers are Detectives and Task Force members.

Tour of Eastern Regional Jail

Intro to Federal Law Enforcement. Speakers are agents of the FBI, ATF, Customs and the DEA.

Tour of Central Dispatch and K9 demonstration.

Tour of the Air National Guard

Domestic abuse and family crime.

Learning Objectives

 

Be able to understand and describe the organizational structure of the Martinsburg City Police

Be able to explain the mission, values and goals of the department

Be able to understand the concept of community policing

You will have explained to you the basic concept of criminal law and will be introduced to the judicial system

Observe procedures we follow in the enforcement of underage drinking and the detection of drunk drivers

Be able to explain the importance of traffic law enforcement

Be able to explain the cause of drug abuse. You will also see what illegal drugs are and have provided to you information on addiction. You will know the laws about drug possession and the penalties for the crimes

You will understand the importance of crime prevention

You will understand the handling of calls for service by our department

You will be exposed to many levels of law enforcement

You will experience a moderate level of discipline needed to complete a law enforcement training academy

You will be responsible for assignments given by the instructor

You will be exposed to equipment used by police officers
